BNP leaders and activists started a hunger strike in Dhaka demanding release of their chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail after convicted in a graft case.
The programme began around 10:00am in front of the Jatiya Press Club while it will continue until 4:00pm.
In a bid to observe their pre-announced programme, several hundred leaders and activists of BNP took position near Jatiya Press Club since this morning.
The party standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, joined the programme.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers took a tight security measure in the Press Club area following the BNP's programme.
BNP's different district and city units are also scheduled to observe similar programmes at their convenient time and places.
Earlier, BNP leaders and followers formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Monday and staged a sit-in programme in front of party’s Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday protesting the jailing of Khaleda Zia.
A special judge’s court on February 8 sentenced former prime minister BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years in prison after she was found guilty in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
