Jafar Iqbal Khan, provost of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has resigned from his post on Wednesday amid protests over the killing of Abrar Fahad, a second year student of the university.

Several teachers said that the provost has submitted the resignation letter.

Provost's resignation is one of the 10 points demands set by the BUET students and before the deadline, Jafar tendered his resignation.

Abrar, a student of EEE, was beaten to death reportedly by leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Monday. Police recovered his body from the staircase of the dormitory on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, 13 accused were arrested in connection with the murder. BUET students have been staging demonstration to press home their 10-point demand. All the academic activities of BUET will be kept shut if their demands are unmet.
