Special Correspondent
The Daily Samakal has obtained CCTV footage of the killing incident of Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
The footage shows that four men were carrying Abrar while another person is seen walking behind them. Then, five more persons were seen to follow them. The video footage shows a total of 10 persons.
Before getting the CCTV footage by the Daily Samakal, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Krishnapada Roy said, "We have initially found evidence that Abar was beaten to death. We are looking into the matter to find out the killers. There is no doubt that this is a murder."
"We have some CCTV footage," he said, adding that action will be taken against the responsible persons after analysing the footage. Punishment must be taken against the persons irrespective of their political identities.
Meanwhile, the agitating students were demanding the release of CCTV footage. But police sought time to release it apprehending that the CCTV footage might create instability on the campuses.
The body of Abrar Fahad was recovered from the staircase of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of BUET at around 3am on Monday, said Chawkbazar Police Station Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain.
There were injury marks on Abrar's body, he added.
Fellow students alleged that several persons took Abar from Room No. 1011 of Sher-e-Bangla Hall at around 8pm on Sunday and he was untraced until 2am on Monday. They believed that he was beaten up in Room No. 2011 of the hall. The persons who took Abrar from his room are the leaders and followers of Mehedi Hasan Rasel, BUET unit BCL general secretary.
Abrar, hailed from Kushtia, was a second-year student at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of BUET.
Police have so far arrested six persons, including four leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in connection with the murder of Abrar Fahad.
Of the arrestees, four are leaders of BUET unit of BCL and the identities of the rest could not be ascertained yet.
The detained four BCL leaders are Mehedi Hasan Rasel, BUET unit BCL general secretary; Fuad Hussain, its joint general secretary; Anik Sarker, information and research secretary and Meftahul Islam Jion, sports secretary, said Chawkbazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sohrab Hossain.
Rasel and Fuad were arrested on Monday morning while Anik and Jion in the afternoon, said Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Following the killing, students of Dhaka University (DU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have staged demonstrations on their respective campuses protesting killing incident of Abrar Fahad.
A protest rally under the banner of general students of Dhaka University was staged at the base of anti-terrorism Raju sculpture around 12pm on Monday.
Later, a procession was brought out from there and ended in front Sher-E-Bangla hall of BUET after parading the main points of the university.
The demonstrating students demanded exemplary punishment of the killers soon. They said that Abrar was killed due to his anti-India Facebook post.
Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and leaders of different left-leaning student organisations also joined the protest rally and procession.
Meanwhile, the students of Sher-E-Bangla hall of BUET besieged their Provost office.
