Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received two awards of the ‘ITU Telecom World 2019’ in recognition of Bangladesh’s success in telecommunication sector and digitisation.

The awards are: “The ITU Telecom World Awards 2019 Certificate of Appreciation” and “The ITU Telecom World Awards 2019 Recognition of Excellence”.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar along with the ministry’s Secretary Ashoke Kumar Biswas handed over the awards to the premier at the outset of today’s cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, reports BSS.

The two awards were handed over to Bangladesh at the “ITU Telecom World 2019” held in the Hungarian capital of Budapest on September 9-12.

The ITU Telecom World Awards 2019 Certificate of Appreciation was given to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for the country’s active participation in the ITU Telecom World 2019 and showcasing the progress of Digital Bangladesh by setting up a Bangladesh pavilion at the event.

Central Biometric Verification Monitoring Platform (CBVMP), the successful initiative to build Digital Bangladesh, received “The ITU Telecom World Awards 2019 Recognition of Excellence” as the best innovation in the ITU Telecom World 2019.

Thanks to use of the CBVMP platform, it is possible to properly verify the registration of every SIM card, NID card, personal information and photograph. As a result, committing crimes in these fields has declined to a great extent.

ITU Telecom World is the global platform for governments, corporates and tech SMEs to accelerate ICT innovation for economic growth and social good.

It is part of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs.

At today’s cabinet meeting, the prime minister also unveiled the cover of “Standing Orders on Disaster (SOD)-2019”.

The SOD-2019 was amended under the initiative of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief as per a decision of National Disaster Management Council meeting held on April 18, 2019 with the prime minister in the chair.
