The outgoing mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sayeed Khokon wants nomination from Awami League to contest in Dhaka-10 seat by-election.

He collected and submitted the nomination form of the party on Friday, the last day of selling and submitting party nomination forms.

The by-elections will be held on March 21.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was a member of the Dhaka-10 constituency. On February 1, he was elected as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.

Taposh resigned from his post of Member of Parliament to take part in the city election. The Election Commission then declared the seat vacant.

Later, Khokon, who failed to secure nomination for the next mayoral race from Awami League, has been elected executive member of central working committee, the highest decision-making body of the party.

After splitting Dhaka City Corporation into two parts in 2015, Sayeed Khokon, son of Mohammad Hanif who was mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, was elected as mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation on April 28 in the same year.

A joint meeting of ruling Awami League’s Parliamentary Board and Local Government Nomination Board will be held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official Ganabhaban residence on Saturday.

AL President and Parliamentary Board and Local Government Nomination Board President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting at 7 pm, a party press release said.

A total of 78 aspirants collected application forms to get Awami League (AL) tickets to contest in the by-election to five parliamentary seats.

The polls will be held in Dhaka-10, Gaibandha-3 and Bagerhat-4 on March 21 while the polls dates for Bagura-1 and Jashore-6 are yet to be announced.

The interviews of the intending candidates will be held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official Ganabhaban residence at 7pm.
