Twelve prominent citizens of Bangladesh have expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Delhi for several days.

They expressed their concern in a joint statement sent on Thursday.

The signatories of the joint statement are: Dr Anisuzzaman, Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, Hasan Azizul Haque, Anupam Sen, Hasan Imam, Sarwar Ali, Ramendu Majumder, Mofidul Haque, Tariq Ali, Mamunur Rashid, Nasiruddin Yousuff and Golam Kuddus.

The message states, "We are deeply concerned about the ongoing riotous situation in India, a friendly neighbor and a leading friend of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. At the same time, we are convinced that if the situation is not resolved jointly, there will be instability in the neighboring countries which will destroy the peace, democracy, development and communal harmony of the countries of the region. We call upon the Government of India and the people, to take effective measures to protect India's heritage, communal harmony and democratic values. '

Several parts of northeast Delhi witnessed incidents of stone-pelting, arson and firing from country-arms during clashes between anti and pro Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) groups. The violence began on Sunday evening and it turned deadly on Monday and Tuesday leaving at least 34 people dead and over 200 injured.
