3 dead, over 40 hurt in Moghbazar explosion

At least three people were killed and over 40 others injured in an explosion in Boro Moghbazar area in the city on Sunday evening.

The explosion took place around 7:30pm at a building in Wireless Gate area, said Sazzadur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Police.

A total of 13 firefighting units have been trying to bring the fire under control, he added.

At least 10 of the 39 injured have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the rest of them to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the police official.

Witnesses said the blast also caused extensive damage to nearby buildings.

Russell Sikder, an official at the Central Control Room of the Fire Service and Civil Defense, told The Daily Samakal that they received news that a building in Boro Maghbazar caught fire after an air-conditioner (AC) exploded at around 7.30pm. 

After that 13 units were sent to the spot to douse the fire, he added.

The official said they have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion.

Witnesses said the blast broke the glasses of the windows of the nearby buildings and its pieces were falling down, injuring the pedestrians.
