Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal is reluctant to accept the figure of the new poor found by the survey of private organizations until the government findings are received.

"I do not accept this figure of the new poor," he told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday.

“Those who have, we need to know first from where they got a list of 2 crore or 1 crore or 10 people who have become poor newly.”

The Finance Minister said there is Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) for conducting research in this regard. As long as information is not available from these public organizations, there is no opportunity to receive information from other organizations.

A recent survey by the Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC) and the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) found that 2.45 crore people were newly impoverished in the country.

On the other hand, a report by the research institute Sanem said that the overall poverty rate (upper poverty rate) in the country has increased by 42 percent due to the effect of corona. The company said this on the basis of a nationwide food survey.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) today approved 11 proposals involving around Taka 2,579.30 crore.

Among those, six proposals are of the Road Transport and Highways Division, two of the Local Government Division, one of the Public Security Division, one of the Water Resources Ministry and one of Labour and Employment Ministry.

The approval came from the 20th meeting of the CCGP held virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.
