7 killed in thunderbolt in four northern districts

Seven people were killed in five separate incidents of lightning at different places of Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Nilphamari districts amid inclement weather on Thursday, reports BSS.


Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatibandha police station in Lalmonirhat Faruk Hossain said two persons were killed after lightning struck them while they were fishing in the Kalibari Beel of Tongbhanga union in Hatibandha upazila.


“The victims were Mantu Miah, 32, and Atiar Rahman, 38, of village Bezgram in Tongbhanga union of Hatibandha upazila,” the OC Hossain said.


In another incident, two youths were killed when thunderbolt struck them while they were fishing in the river Sakoa of Dahogram union in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat this morning.


“The victims were Zahedul Islam, 28, and Rakib Hassan, 24, of village Islampur in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat,” OC (Investigation) of Patgram police station Md. Mozammel Haque said.


In Panchagarh, lightning strike killed a farmer along with his one bullock while he was ploughing his farmland for transplantation of Transplanted Aman (T-Amn) rice seedling in village Kaharpara of Boda upazila today.


“The victim was Mahesh Chandra, 55, of the same village in Marea Bamoshat union of Boda upazila,” OC of Boda police station Abu Haider Md. Ashrafuzzaman confirmed.


“In Thakurgaon, farmer Sohel Rana, 25, of village Sarkerpara in Bangaon union of Sadar upazila was killed after lighting hit him while working on his farmland,” OC of Thakurgaon Sadar police station Tanvirul Islam said.


In Nilphamari, housewife Fatema Begum, 42, of village Naodabash was killed and her husband Abdur Rahman, 50, seriously injured after lightning struck them while they were fishing in the Naodabash Beel of Boragari union in Domar upazila.


“Local people recovered the body of the housewife and rescued the injured husband and sent him to Domar Upazila Health Complex,” OC of Domar police station Mostafizur Rahman said.


The bodies were handed over to relatives of the deceased persons.
