The Jhalokati District Bus Owners' Association has suspended bus services on 10 routes including Barisal-Khulna from 10 am on Wednesday after tempo workers beat up a bus owner.
Nasir Uddin Ahmed, joint-general secretary of the Jhalokati Bus and Minibus Owners' Association, said bus owner Golam Rasul blocked the tempo on the regional highway in the Chhatrakanda area of Jhalokati around 9am on Wednesday. Consquently, the tempo drivers got angry and beat him, he added.
In protest of the incident, an emergency meeting of the owners’ association and workers’ union at the Jhalokati bus terminal has declared an indefinite suspension of bus services on 10 routes from Jhalokati to Barisal, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Patharghata, Bhandaria, Kaukhali, Mathbaria and Amua.
Kawsar Hossain Shipon, general secretary of the Barisal-Patuakhali Bus Owners' Association, said bus workers from Jhalokati were staying in the Rayapur area adjacent to the Barisal city, barring buses from entering Barisal and for this reason, bus services from Barisal to Jhalokati, Pirojpur and Khulna district routes are closed.
