Three policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, have been arrested in Cox's Bazar for allegedly snatching Tk 3 lakh from a woman at a gun point.
Cox's Bazar district police spokesman Additional Superintendent of Police Rafiqul Islam confirmed that a case has been registered and the three arrestees have been sent to court.
There were allegations that the policemen were in plain clothes, he said, adding that legal action is being taken against all concerned after investigating the incident.
The three arrestees are SI Nur Huda Siddiqui, Constable Aminul Momenin and Mamun Mollah. They are all working at the Cox's Bazar city police outpost.
According to local sources, Rozina Akhtar, wife of Riaz Ahmed, a businessman, hailed from Kutubdiapara of the city, faced the incident on Monday night. A policeman was caught red handed with the help of locals. Later, the matter was reported to Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station by calling 999. Police went to the spot and took the arrested policeman into their custody. Two more policemen involved in the incident were then arrested.
Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station OC Sheikh Monirul Gias said a case has been registered against all concerned under the Speedy Trial Act.
Rozina Akhtar, a victim of the robbery, said she was returning with Tk 3 lakh from a relative to buy goods from the shop. As she approached the house, three white-clad policemen came in an auto-rickshaw and aimed a pistol at her head. Then when they wanted to take the bag full of money, she pulled one of them from behind. At this time her body was hit with a pistol. When the locals came forward, the two fled the scene. A policeman detained by the mob was later handed over to the police.
Later Rozina has filed a case with Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station.
