SI's millionaire wife sent to jail

A Chittagong court has sent Golzar Begum, the millionaire wife of CID sub-inspector Nawab Ali, to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

She surrendered before the court of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ashfaqur Rahman on Tuesday and applied for bail. The court rejected the plea and ordered to send her to jail.

CID sub-inspector Nawab Ali, Additional Assistant Tax Commissioner of Tax Region-1 Chittagong Bahar Uddin Chowdhury and tax inspector Dipankar Ghosh are absconding in the same case. 

Golzar Begum is the organizing secretary of Chittagong Mahanagar Mohila Dal. Her husband Nawab is currently working as SI of CID in Dhaka.

ACC lawyer Mahmudul Haque Mahmud told The Daily Samakal that Golzar Begum surrendered to the court in a case of illegal acquisition of wealth and money laundering and sought bail. 

Mahmudul also said, SI Nawab Ali showed income in the name of his wife by earning 1 crore 34 lakh 99 thousand taka illegally. The ACC went to investigate and found the truth of illegal earnings against him. The case was filed by the ACC on October 9, 2019. 

Following the investigation, on October 7, 2020, the ACC framed a chargesheet against Nawab Ali, his wife Golzar Begum, Additional Assistant Tax Commissioner of Tax Region-1 Chittagong Bahar Uddin Chowdhury and Tax Inspector Dipankar Ghosh. 

The court accepted the chargesheet and issued arrest warrants against the four on February 22.
