The decision was made by Nazmul Hassan, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), at a press conference following a board meeting on Thursday.

The decision came ahead of the start of a month-long trip to the West Indies later this month. Shakib was the favorite to succeed Mominul Haque.

Shakib became Bangladesh's seventh Test captain and led the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Caribbeans in the second Test of the two-match series.

The talismanic cricketer, however, has only managed to lead the Tigers in 14 Tests since then, the most recent of which ended in a humbling home defeat to Afghanistan in 2019.
