Jamaat-Shibir went on rampage centring Sayeedi’s body

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Tuesday said Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatrashibir went on a rampage on Monday night centring the body of convicted war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.

Several senior members were also injured during the rampage, the DMP commissioner said at a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka at around 11am on Tuesday.

"Sentenced to life, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi died at a hospital at 8:40pm. Jamaat-Shibir went on a rampage centring his body. They attacked police and vandalised vehicles. They set fire to two motorbikes," Khandker Golam Faruq said.

"After Fazr prayers on Tuesday, they took over Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). They went on live and called everyone to go there. The police had to apply limited force to bring the situation under control and dispersed them," he added.

The DMP commissioner also said that permission to hold a gayebi janaza for Sayeedi will not be given in light of the situation.
