‘Regional economy will advance if India-Bangladesh works together’

Speakers at a seminar said there is a need for complementary economies between India and Bangladesh. 

India and Bangladesh should focus on trade, transit, tourism and multi-label connectivity; they said adding that if India-Bangladesh works together, the region's economy will advance.

Speakers came up with the observation while speaking at a seminar on 'Development and Connectivity of Chittagong: Possibilities and Challenges' held at Bangabandhu Conference Hall of Chittagong World Trade Center on Saturday afternoon. 

The seminar was organized under the joint initiative of Bangladesh-India History and Heritage Council and Development Coordination.

Pranay Kumar Verma, High Commissioner of India assigned to Bangladesh was the guest of honour at the event presided over by Atiur Rahman, eminent economist, former governor of Bangladesh Bank and chairman of Unnayan Shamannay.

In his speech, Prannay Verma said, “Chittagong has immense importance in the economy of Bangladesh. If Chittagong advances, Bangladesh will also advance. India-Bangladesh wants to work together for economic development.”

“Chittagong will change if the infrastructure development projects are completed. However, it is not enough just to implement the project, it has to be coordinated. A co-ordinate task force should be considered for this coordination. Participatory activities are required in this regard. Forward and backward linkage should be accomplished,” said Dr. Atiur Rahman.

A good number of noted personalities on different disciplines were present on the occasion.
