Grieving father mourns son’s death: ‘All my life’s achievements gone’

The namaz-e-janaza of Jobayed Hossain, a student of Jagannath University’s Statistics Department (2019-20 academic year), took place at the university’s Science Faculty premises on Monday afternoon.

Teachers, students, Chhatra Dal leaders, activists, and relatives attended the somber event.

Jobayed, who was the convener of the Chhatra Dal university unit, was found dead on Sunday, his bloodied body recovered from the stairs of a house in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, where he worked as a tutor.

Before the funeral, Jobayed’s father, Mobarak Hossain, spoke with deep sorrow about his son’s murder.

“I sent my son to university to study, hoping he would achieve great things and secure a job. I wanted to see him thrive. But today, I am taking his body home. How can I describe this pain?” Overcome with emotion, Mobarak broke down in tears.

Composing himself, he added, “All the achievements of my 58 years are gone. Jobayed is no longer with me. I have no other demands—just a fair trial for his murder. That’s all I ask from the government.”

Three Arrested in Connection with Murder

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Lalbagh Zone Deputy Commissioner Mallick Ahsan Uddin Sami reported that three suspects have been arrested in a special operation linked to Jobayed’s murder. Their identities are withheld for now, with a police briefing scheduled for Tuesday.

Mourning and Demands for Justice

At a press conference following the namaz-e-janaza, the Teachers’ Association General Secretary, Raish Uddin, announced a two-day mourning period, including a mourning rally.

He stated that if the investigation does not progress within 10 hours, further actions will be announced.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Rezaul Karim pledged full administrative support to the police, emphasising, “We will stand by until the true culprit is arrested.”

Nasir Uddin, General Secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Central Committee, revealed that Jobayed’s elder brother, Saikat, had recently passed the 49th BCS examination, a milestone Jobayed never learned about.

Nasir demanded swift justice, stating, “The real killer must be arrested immediately. We will not tolerate any lapses in the investigation.”
