Ali Hossain Fakir takes charge as new IGP

The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, officially assumed his duties on Wednesday morning. Upon his arrival at the Police Headquarters, he was greeted with a formal Guard of Honor by a smartly turned-out police contingent.

Prior to this appointment, Md. Ali Hossain Fakir served as the Additional IGP of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn). He succeeds outgoing IGP Baharul Alam. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular regarding his appointment on Tuesday.

A career officer, Ali Hossain Fakir joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on November 15, 1995, through the 15th BCS (Police) batch. Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities across multiple units. He previously served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura districts.

His leadership roles also include serving as the Commandant of RRF Sylhet and as the Commanding Officer of 3 APBn Khulna, 5 APBn Dhaka, and 7 APBn Sylhet. As a Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he held key positions at Police Headquarters and the Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBn).

On the international stage, Ali Hossain Fakir represented Bangladesh Police in UN peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast.

He is currently the Acting President of the Bangladesh Police Service Association. Academically, he holds a Master’s in Management and an MBA from the University of Dhaka. Born on April 5, 1968, in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, he brings decades of experience to the nation's top police post.
