Gunshots, explosions heard from Mirpur ‘militant den’

Sounds of heavy gunshots and explosions were heard from the suspected militant hideout in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Tuesday night.

A thick smoke was rising from the six-storey house on Mazar Road after sounds of heavy explosions were heard around 10:00pm.   

The locals said that they also heard several rounds of gunshots.

According to RAB Abdullah, his two associates, his two wives and two children were holed up in a flat on the fourth floor of the house.

Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, legal and media wing director of the RAB, this evening said  “militants” holed up in house agreed to surrender to the lawmen.

Residents of the building were evacuated and the locals taken to a safe distance by morning.

Tipped off, a RAB team cordoned off the six-storey building on the south side of Shaheed Buddijibi Graveyard from 12:00am, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Unu Mong, also operation officer of RAB-4.

Residents of the building were evacuated and the locals taken to a safe distance by morning.
