36 garment-laden trucks stranded at Benapole port due to Indian import ban

India has imposed a ban on importing several Bangladeshi consumer goods, including processed food and fruits, through its northeastern region, impacting operations at Benapole port in Jessore.

As a result, 36 trucks carrying garments from Bangladesh were stranded at the port on Sunday, awaiting entry into India.

Kartik Chakraborty, General Secretary of the Petrapole Clearing and Forwarding Agent Staff Association in India, stated that the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued the import ban on various Bangladeshi products.

However, discussions are ongoing at customs to allow the import of goods for which Letters of Credit (LC) or Telegraphic Transfers (TT) have already been processed, he added.

Mujibur Rahman, President of the Benapole C&F Agent Staff Association, confirmed that the 36 trucks, loaded with garment goods, are stuck at Benapole land port due to India’s import restrictions on garments through land routes.
