Shamim Haque’s candidature cancelled

The Election Commission on Friday cancelled the candidature of Awami League's Faridpur-3 aspirant Shamim Haque alias Holland Shamim.

The commission cancelled Shamim's candidature after hearing an appeal filed by AK Azad, another aspirant of the same constituency, challenging his candidacy.

AK Azad filed an appeal before the EC challenging Shamim's candidature for having dual citizenship.

As per constitution, no one having dual citizenship can contest the elections.

During a hearing on Wednesday led by CEC Kazi Habibul Awal, the commission reviewed an appeal concerning the renouncement of Netherlands citizenship. Shamim's lawyer presented arguments stating that his client had successfully applied for renunciation on November 9, accompanied by relevant documentation as evidence.

The 12th parliamentary polls will be held on January 7.
