JCD blocks Shahbagh, demands justice for Shammo’s murder

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has blocked Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, demanding the arrest and trial of those responsible for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo.

Shammo, a student at Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research, was a leader of JCD.

The blockade, which began after 3 pm on Tuesday, has halted traffic at Shahbagh, leading to significant congestion in the adjacent areas. 

JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir led the protest.

The activists chanted slogans such as “My brother is in the grave, why is the murderer free?” and “We demand justice for Shammo’s murder.”

Samya, the literature and publications secretary of Dhaka University’s AF Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal, was stabbed to death on May 13 at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. 

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident. 

Since Shammo’s death, JCD has been staging daily protests, demanding the resignation of Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed for failing to ensure student safety on the campus. 

On Monday, during a torch procession at the university, JCD leaders reiterated these demands. 

Previously, they blocked Shahbagh for two hours and threatened to besiege the Jamuna, pressing for the arrest and trial of those responsible for Shammo’s murder.
