Trump issues warning to new Venezuelan leader Rodríguez ahead of her swearing in

Donald Trump warns Venezuela's new leader Delcy Rodríguez she could "pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro" if she "doesn't do what's right."

Speaking to The Atlantic, the US president adds that for Venezuela, "regime change, anything you want to call it, is better than what you have right now."

At her first cabinet meeting, Rodríguez - who is due to be sworn in on Monday - issues a direct appeal to Trump: "Our peoples and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war."

Meanwhile, abducted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife will appear in a court in New York on drug-related charges, as Trump insists the US is in control of Venezuela.

Trump has threatened further military action against Venezuela, as well as against Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. He also warned Mexico it must “get its act together”.

The UNSC is set to meet on Monday to discuss the US action, which UN chief Antonio Guterres described as a dangerous precedent.

Maduro was abducted over the weekend by US forces and taken to New York in a military operation that also saw large-scale strikes on several locations in Venezuela.
