72-hour given for tannery relocation

The tannery owners have been ordered to shift their industrial units to the Leather Industrial City at Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, from Hazaribag within the next 72 hours.

The tannery owners who will not relocate their industrial units within the stipulated time then those units have been ordered to shut down. 

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Sunday issued the order, said a press release of the ministry.

The industries minister also ordered officials to cancel the plots at Savar’s Leather Industrial City those were allotted to the tannery units which would not move from Hazaribagh within the time.

Amir Hossain Amu asked the Secretary of the ministry to hold evaluation and progress meeting with the institutions’ chiefs after each 10-day in a bid to implement the project within the framed time.

The industries minister also asked the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) to serve the legal notice in this regard today (Sunday).
   
According to the Memorandum of Understanding between BSCIC and the tannery owners, the owners were supposed to shift their industrial units to Savar’s Leather Industrial City from Hazaribag within December in 2014. Later, the time was extended till December 31, 2015. But many owners were unable to move their tanneries.
