Dhaka pursues comprehensive solution to Palestinian issue

Bangladesh pursues a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative and Quartet Roadmap, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative (PR) to the UN Masud Bin Momen has said.

 

He made the comments while participating in a daylong open debate at the Security Council (SC) on the situation in the Middle East including the Palestine question at the UNSC on Tuesday, reports BSS.

 

The PR said Israel has continued its occupation, expansion of settlements and indiscriminate attacks against civilians including women and children.

 

Against this backdrop, he said, the UN member states should mobilize their combined political efforts through the UN Security Council to achieve the goal.

 

Momen said under the watchful guidance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's "zero tolerance" approach, Bangladesh remains vigilant so that violent extremists cannot just employ any cause for their distorted ideologies and actions.

 

The PR said, in this spirit, Bangladesh supports the OIC proposals to work towards a Council resolution to revive political efforts aimed at achieving the desired two-state solution.

 

"The collective solidarity of the member states with the Palestinian people must be translated into sustained and result-oriented actions," he emphasized.

 

Inaugurating the debate, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said as the wider Middle East continues to be gripped by a relentless wave of extremist terror, Israelis and Palestinians have an opportunity to restore hope to a region torn apart by intolerance and cruelty.

 

Urging the two countries to accept this historic challenge, the UN Secretary General called upon the international community and regional

partners for extending their overall support.

 

In the debate, the UN member states expressed serious concern about Israel's new resettlement plan in the occupied West Bank and urged the

international community to remain more committed to actively help Palestinians and Israelis to rebuild trust and achieve an enduring peace.

 

Representatives of more than 50 member states participated in the daylong open debate.
