Show-cause issued to 1,209 schools over SSC extra fee

Education Ministry has served show-cause notices to a total of 1,209 educational institutions for not responding to the ministry over charging additional registration fees from the SSC candidates.

If these educational institutions will not provide satisfactory responses within the stipulated time, the managing committees will be dissolved in line with the legal action, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday.

The notices issued on February 25 asked the school authorities to come up with their explanation within 30 days.


Earlier on February 3, the ministry directed the concerned authorities of the educational institutions to refund the additional registration fees charged from the SSC candidates within seven days.  

Then the ministry said that it received allegations of taking additional registration fee from the SSC candidates against a total of 3,038 schools across the country.

“It does not matter which institutions are powerful and which are not. All are the same to us. Therefore, same law will be applicable for all,” Nahid said.

The minister also warned that if they do not respond to the show-cause notices or the ministry finds their answer unsatisfactory, the government will act as per the High Court order in this regard.

A report prepared by education boards, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) and other government agencies was submitted today with a list of institutions who took extra fees, who returned and who did not take it, Nahid said.

A total of 830 schools have already returned back the excess money and informed the development to the ministry as well.

Some 999 schools denied the allegation and the ministry has been running investigation into their claim.

But, the 1,209 schools did not give any reply despite the expiry of the deadline.

On January 6, the High Court ordered the government to make schools across the country that charged additional fees from SSC candidates to refund them by January 20.
