Banasree siblings killing: Mother placed on 5-day remand

A Dhaka Court has placed Mahfuza Malek Jesmin, who confessed to strangling her two children to death in Dhaka’s Banashree, on a five-day remand.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakrobarty handed down the order on Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, police sought a 10-day remand for the mother Mahfuza Malek Jesmin after producing her before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday said the mother of the two siblings, who were found dead at home in Dhaka’s Banashree, confessed to killing of her children.

Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of RAB Legal and Media wing, said “The mother killed her children over extra marital affair, dispute over land, and psychological and social disorder.”

Earlier, DMCH Forensic department lecturer Prodeep Biswash, who conducted the autopsy of the siblings, said that they found the symptom of suffocating the siblings to death.

Nusrat Jahan Urmi, 14, a Class-VII student of Viqarunnisa Noon School, and her younger brother Alvi Aman, 6, a nursery student of Holy Crescent School in Banashree died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday night, hours after they ate food bought from a Chinese restaurant.

Their mother Mahfuza Malek Jesmin said the family brought home leftover food after having dinner on Saturday night at a Chinese restaurant near their Banasree home.

The mother served the rest of the Chinese food to her two children for lunch on Monday while she and her husband had a home-cooked meal.

Both children were whisked off to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after the mother noticed that they were not waking up from an afternoon nap.
