Writ challenging DMP's tenant info collection dismissed

The High Court (HC) has dismissed a writ petition challenging legality of the police's move to collect personal information about tenants from the landlords in Dhaka Metropolitan area.

A HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order on Sunday.

The court also said that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) can take any step under the DMP Rules, 2006 to prevent the terrorist activities in the city.

On March 3, Supreme Court lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua filed the petition to the HC seeking its order on the authorities concerned to preserve those information which have already been collected and not to use the information until a specific law is formulated to this effect.

After the HC’s dismissal of the petition, Jyotirmoy Barua said he did not take the decision till then whether he will move an appeal before the Supreme Court against the HC order.

Earlier on February 29, the DMP announced that it had been collecting ‘identification information’ about landlords and tenants since November last year and asked all to provide the information by March 15 this year.
