Nizami files review plea

Condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami has filed a review plea against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On behalf of the Jamaat chief, his counsel submitted the petition to the appeal section of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday morning, confirmed Nizami’s son Barrister Nazib Momen.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.

On January 6 this year, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, upheld the capital punishment for Nizami.
