Tk 300cr fine for fingerprint misuse

The cabinet has assured that the fingerprints which are being taken during the biometric registration of mobile phone SIM cards will not be misused.

The cabinet also announced that if any mobile phone operator will misuse subscribers’ fingerprints then the operator will have to count up to Tk 300 crore as fine.   

The decision was taken from a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Monday.

Briefing media after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam assured, “The fingerprints will not be misused and if it happened, operators will face massive punishment. They will have to pay fines up to Tk 300 crore.”

"Fingerprints of the citizens are remained preserved in the national identity (NID) cards’ database. The mobile phone operators will not preserve the fingerprints; they only to verify it with the NID cards,” he said.
