SC scraps acquittal of ex-minister Alamgir’s son

The Supreme Court (SC) has scraped a High Court (HC) verdict that acquitted former Awami League minister MK Alamgir’s son from a graft case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).  

A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha gave its decision on Thursday over a plea by the ACC.

The trial court sentenced MK Alamgir’s two sons — Joy Alamgir and Jalal Alamgir —to three years in prison for not filing their asset details with the ACC.

However, the High Court scraped the verdict on an appeal filed by the former home minister.

Following today’s verdict the ruling party leader’s son Joy has to surrender before the trial court as his another son Jalal died in 2011 in Thailand.

ACC’s counsel Syed Mamun Mahbub said, “We had appealed against the verdict of both of them. But one of them has died, so his matter was dropped.”

The case was filed during the military-backed caretaker regime on June 11 in 2008. They were accused of not complying with the ACC’s order to file wealth details.
