SC rejects review plea against scraping Maya’s graft case acquittal

The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday rejected the review petition against its Appellate Division’s verdict cancelling a High Court judgment that acquitted Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from a corruption case, reports the UNB.

 

A four-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order following the review petition filed by Maya’s counsel Abdul Baset Majumder.

 

With the rejection of the review plea, the 13 years’ jail term Maya was awarded by a lower court will now remain in place, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam said. 

 

Earlier on June 14, 2015, the bench cancelled the HC verdict that acquitted the minister from 13 year’s jail in a corruption case, following a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the ACC.

 

The SC also sent the case to the division concerned for review.

 

On February 14, 2008, the Special Judge Court in a verdict sentenced Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya to 13 years’ jail in a corruption case filed by ACC. 

 

The court also fined him Tk five crore and confiscated his property worth Tk six crore.

 

Maya filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the special court’s verdict on May 25, 2009.

 

On October 27, 2010, a bench of the HC rejected the special court verdict.

 

On June 13, 2007, ACC filed the case against Maya with Sutrapur police station on charge of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk29 lakh and concealing information about it.
