Some eminent personalities demand Manna’s release

Some eminent personalities of the country have demanded the immediate release of Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna.

 

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, they demanded that proper treatment be ensured to ailing Manna, said a party release signed by Nagorik Oikya leader Shahidullah Kaiser, reports the UNB.

 

In the statement, they said Mahmudur Rahman Manna, also a media personality and columnist, played an important role in restoring democracy and implementing human rights in the country which is not unknown to country’s people.

 

They also alleged that mental torture was inflicted on the Nagorik Oikya leader after his arrest, leaving him sick. “Country’s all citizens are worried as proper treatment is not arranged for him,” the statement added.

 

Mentioning that Manna has been in jail for more than a year without trial, the statement said he has neither been given division nor granted bail.

 

They urged the government to release him immediately and give him a chance to defend himself.

 

The signatories to the statement include Dhaka University teachers Prof Abdul Kashem Fazlul Haque and Dr Asif Nazrul, trustee member of Gonoshasthaya Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Manabzamin Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Educationist Mahbub Ullah, New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, journalist Mahfuz Ullah and Amader Orthoneeti Editor Nayeemul Islam Khan.
