Strike cripples waterways traffic

River transport workers went on a non-stop strike across the country since early Thursday to press home their 15-point demand.

Operations at river ports and passenger terminals for waterways have been disrupted after the indefinite strike.

Causing immense sufferings of the people, movement of all kinds of river transports like launch, trawler, barge, tanker, lighter remains suspended since 12:01am.  

Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation called the non-stop strike to press home their demands including Tk 10,000 minimum wage and increase of other benefits.

President of the federation Shah Alam Bhuiyan said that the shipping minister on January 26 assured them of meeting their demand by 30 days.

“But the government is yet to take any measures in this regard and for this, the federation decided to observe the strike,” he added.
