Verdict on Nizami's review plea Thursday

The Supreme Court (SC) will deliver its verdict on Thursday (May 5) on a petition filed by the condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami to review the verdict upholding his death sentence.

After concluding hearing on the petition, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date on Tuesday.

Nizami's lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain placed arguments before the Appellate Division Bench, which started around 9:25am while Attorney General Mahbube Alam placed his arguments on behalf of the state.

Earlier on March 29, the Jamaat chief filed the review petition against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.

On January 6 this year, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, upheld the capital punishment for Nizami.
