SC rejects Nizami’s review plea, upholds death penalty

The Supreme Court (SC) has rejected a petition filed by the condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami to review his death sentence.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha announced the verdict on Thursday.

After the review against death rejected, the government can initiate Niazami’s execution process now. The final chance that remains for the Jamaat chief is to seek presidential clemency.

Earlier on March 29, the Jamaat chief filed the review petition against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.

On January 6 this year, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, upheld the capital punishment for Nizami.
