'Nizami does not seek mercy'

Home Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday informed journalists that the death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami did not seek presidential clemency.

 

The Home Minister's comment came while the execution processes for Motiur Rahman Nizami was going on tonight.

 

Earlier the family members of death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami entered into the Dhaka Central Jail to meet him.

 

Our Correspondent, Ahmadul Hasan Ashik, reported from the jail area in Old Dhaka, 'A total of five family members have entered into the jail around 7.45pm to meet the death row war criminal.'

 

Earlier, the family members of death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami have been asked to meet him at the Dhaka Central Jail.

 

Motiur Rahman Akanda, a defence counsel for the Jamaat-e-Islami chief, has confirmed this to Samakal, this evening.

 

Earlier last night (May 9), the final review verdict of Supreme Court (SC) pronounced against Motiur Rahman Nizami has been read out to Nizami at Dhaka Central Jail.

 

The Dhaka Central Jail authorities have read out the verdict around 8.00pm on the night.

 

Earlier the judges concerned signed on review verdict of condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami Monday (yesterday).

 

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique have signed the review verdict.

 

The verdict copy was first sent to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and then forwarded to the jail authorities for execution processes.

 

Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) has rejected a petition filed by the condemned war criminal to review his death sentence.

 

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha pronounced the verdict on Thursday (May 5).

 

On March 29, the Jamaat chief filed the review petition against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

 

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

 

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.

 

On January 6 this year, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, upheld the capital punishment for Nizami.
