Top war criminal Nizami hanged

The Bangladesh government has hanged war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh liberation war in 1971.

 

The execution has been carried out around 12:10pm tonight at the Dhaka Central Jail in capital's Old Dhaka, Jahangir Kabir, senior jail super of the prison, has confirmed.

 

'Motiur Rahman Nizami was hung by the jail authorities tonight,' the Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has also confirmed this to Samakal.

 

Before completion of the execution, the family members of death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami met him at Dhaka Central Jail.

 

Our Correspondent, Ahmadul Hasan Ashik, reported from the jail area in Old Dhaka, 'The family members have entered into the jail around 7.45pm to meet the death row war criminal and family members came out of the prison around 9:30pm.'

 

The family members of death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami were asked to meet him at the Dhaka Central Jail.

 

The order, however, to execute death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami was given to the Dhaka Central Jail authorities before execution.

 

Home Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, on the other hand, on Tuesday (tonight) informed journalists that the death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami did not seek presidential clemency.

 

The Home Minister's comment came while the execution processes for Motiur Rahman Nizami was going in the night.

 

On May 9 (last night), the final review verdict of Supreme Court (SC) pronounced against Motiur Rahman Nizami was read out to Nizami at Dhaka Central Jail.

 

Earlier the judges concerned signed on review verdict of condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami in the same day.

 

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique have signed the review verdict.

 

The verdict copy was first sent to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and then forwarded to the jail authorities for execution processes.

 

Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected a petition filed by the condemned war criminal to review his death sentence.

 

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha pronounced the verdict on Thursday (May 5).

 

On March 29, the Jamaat chief filed the review petition against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

 

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

 

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.

 

On January 6 this year, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, upheld the capital punishment for Nizami.

 

Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, however, was also hanged for his atrocities committed during the 1971 war of independence on April 11, 2015.
