Passport issuance most corrupt service sector: TIB

Passport issuance is the most corrupted, at 77 percent, service sector in Bangladesh, said a Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) report.

The anti-graft watchdog unveiled the report titled ‘Corruption in Service Sectors: National Household Survey 2015’ at its Dhanmondi office on Wednesday.    

The second corrupted sector is law enforcement agencies, at 74.6 percent, followed by graft at the education sector, 60.8 percent, the TIB report said.

The sectors covered in the survey included transport, land administration, judiciary, health, local government, power, agriculture, taxation, gas, insurance, banking and NGOs.

The survey was conducted over 15,206 households, who victims of corruptions in getting services in 16 public sectors in the period between November 2014 and October 2015 in 64 districts.

The report said that 68 percent householders were victims of different types of corruption in 2015 while 58 percent households directly bribed government officials in getting services in the sectors.

Total bribery in the service sectors in 2015 amounted to Tk 8,822 crore which is 3.7 percent of Bangladesh’s annual budget.


TIB is concerned over the rise of the corruption in the service sectors, said its executor director Iftekharuzzaman while unveiling the report.

TIB chairperson Sultana Kamal, deputy executive director Sumaya Khair, among others, attended in the household survey unveiling programme.
