RU teacher suspended for disparaging remarks

Rajshahi University authorities on Tuesday suspended one of its lecturers on charge of making derogatory remarks about Law Minister Anisul Huq on social networking site Facebook.

The decision was taken at the 457th Syndicate meeting held in the afternoon with RU Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin in the chair.

The action was taken against M Shibli Islam, a lecturer of the RU Law Department, following a recommendation of a parliamentary watchdog, UNB reports.

Besides, the university authorities formed a three-member probe committee to look into the matter. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 workdays.

In his Facebook status posted on July 13, the accused teacher made disparaging remarks over a statement of the Law Minister on the militant attack on the Holey Artisan Restaurant in the capital.

A Syndicate member, wishing not to be named, said the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry sent a letter to the university authorities requesting for taking action against the teacher, describing it as a punishable offence under section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006.
