Gulshan attack: Hasnat,Tahmid on 8-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed ex-private university teacher Hasnat Karim and Canadian university student Tahmid Hasib Khan on an eight-day remand for their alleged involvement with the Gulshan restaurant attack.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nurunnahar Yasmin passed the order on Thursday after the police sought a ten-day remand producing them before it.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman told Samakal that Hasnat Karim was held from Gulshan area and Tahmid Hasib was held from Bashundhara residential area at around 8:45pm last night.

Twenty hostages -- nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi American and two Bangladeshis -- were killed in the terror attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan on July 1.


Besides, two senior police officers-Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam were killed when they tried to rescue the hostages.

Hasnat Karim, a former teacher of North South University and UK citizen, and Tahmid Hasib, a student of a university in Toronto, were witness to the bloody carnage inside the restaurant.  

Both-- Hasnat Karim and Tahmid Hasib -- were “under surveillance” of the law enforcers, Additional Commissioner of DMP and chief of Counter-Terrorism unit Monirul Islam.
