Teacher humiliation: HC orders for judicial probe

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday ordered a Dhaka court to conduct a judicial probe into the incident of public humiliation of Narayanganj school teacher, Shyamal Kanti Bhakta.
In a bid to identify the perpetrators, in the incidents, the HC directed the chief metropolitan magistrate in Dhaka to hold a fresh investigation.
The chief metropolitan magistrate also asked to submit the report in this regard to the High Court by November 3.
Earlier on March 26, the probe body formed to investigate into the humiliation of Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj, submitted its report to the office of attorney general.
On May 13, locals beat Shyamal Kanti Bhakta for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. At one stage, local MP AKM Selim Osman forced him to do sit-ups holding his ears.
A video clip of the incident went viral on social media, at that time, triggering public outrage and a firestorm of protests on social networking sites with people mimicking the squatting holding their earlobes.
The five-member committee was formed on May 18, headed by upazila secondary education officer Nurul Amin, to investigate the incident ‘as the issue is very sensitive’.
On May 19, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told the media that they have dismissed the school’s managing body and reinstated the teacher, Shyamal Kanti.
