Primary evidence of Hasnat’s involvement found: Police

Primary evidence of ex-private university teacher Hasnat Karim’s involvement with the Gulshan restaurant attack has found, DMP joint commissioner of detective branch Abdul Baten has said.

He made the disclosure while briefing media at the media centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) around 12:30pm on Sunday.

He said, Hasnat was arrested under Section 54 on suspicion of having links with the Gulshan attackers. Later, he was shown arrested after getting evidence of his involvement in interrogation, he added.

A Dhaka court yesterday granted a fresh remand for Hasnat and another suspect Canadian university student Tahmid Hasib Khan for further interrogation.

Earlier on August 4, Hasnat and Tahmid were arrested under Section 54 on suspicion of having links with the Gulshan attackers.

Hasnat Karim, a former teacher of North South University and UK citizen, and Tahmid Hasib, a student of a university in Toronto, were witness to the bloody carnage inside the restaurant.

Twenty hostages -- nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi American and two Bangladeshis -- were killed in the terror attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan on July 1.

Besides, two senior police officers -- Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam -- were killed when they tried to rescue the hostages.
