7 'militants' killed in Gazipur raid

Seven suspected militants were killed in a raid by police's counter-terrorism unit at a house in Patartek area of Gazipur on Saturday.

The military commander of “Neo JMB”, Akash, was also killed in today’s raid alongside six others, police said.

Monirul Islam, Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police told Samakal that two police members were also wounded during the raid.

Tipped off, a team of counter-terrorism unit, Special Weapon and Tactics Team(SWAT) and district police launched an operation at a den in the two-storey building in the around 12:00am.

“The law enforcers first asked the militants to surrender but they didn’t respond to their call. Then they opened fire on the militants who also fired back. The three-hour gunfight left seven militants dead,” said Home Minister ASsaduzzaman Khan at a press briefing after the operation.

The minister said the operations have been successful as common people came forward to assist the law enforcers.

With the seven, a total nine suspected militants died during separate raids on two hideouts in Gazipur and two others at Tangail today.
