Govt okays accreditation council for universities

The government has approved the draft rules of ‘Accreditation Council Act 2016’ to ensure quality and standard of higher education in Bangladesh.

The approval came from the regular Cabinet meeting held at the Cabinet Division with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday. 

Briefing media after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said that the 13-member council will consist of a chairman, four full-time members and eight part time members.

The standard of any university will be depended on the certification of the council, he said adding that no university can offer certificates of higher education without the approval of the council.

The accreditation of the educational institution will be scrapped if it misinforms or conceals information from the council, he added.
