Colleague arrested over RU teacher Joly suicide case

Police have shown a Rajshahi University (RU) teacher arrested in connection with a case filed over the death of Akter Jahan Joly, an associate professor of mass communication and journalism department of the university.

Police picked up Atikur Rahman Raja, an assistant professor of the same department, on Thursday afternoon for interrogating him over suicide provocation.

The law enforcers on Saturday afternoon shown him arrested in the suicide provocation case after three days of interrogating.

Amir Zafar, deputy commissioner (East) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said important evidences of suicide provocation have been found after interrogation Atikur Rahman Raja.  

“Police are assuming that Raja has direct or indirect provocation over the suicide of Akter Jahan Joly”, he said.

He has been sent to jail after police produced him before the court this afternoon showing arrested in the case, added the police official.

On September 9, police recovered the body of Akter Jahan from her room at RU Juberi Bhaban and found a suicide note. Later, an autopsy confirmed that it was a suicide.

Kamuul Hasan Ratan, younger brother of the RU teacher, filed a suicide provocation case with with Motihar Police Station on the following day.
