2 Santal men sent to jail

Police today sent two Gaibandha Santal men to jail through court order as Rangpur Medical College Hospital authorities released them from the Hospital after treatment.

 

They are Choron Soren and Bimal Kisku, both were undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital after they got injured in the recent incident.

 

Gobindaganj Thana Police today took them to Gaibandha from Rangpur.

 

Earlier the High Court on Monday ordered the government to remove the handcuffs from three injured Santal men of Gaibandha who have been detained in a case filed for attacking police during a clash on November 6 last.

 

The court in the same day also ordered Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur Range and superintendent of Gaibandha police to submit reports in this regard by November 16.

 

Another Santal man was identified as Dijen Tudu who was undergoing treatment at National Institute of Eye Science & Hospital in the capital after the attack.

 

SC lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua filed the petition following a report published in a national daily on November 13 with the headline: ‘Santal man being treated with hand cuffed, tied’.

 

On November 6 a clash was ensued when the Santal community there protested the grabbing of their lands by some sugar mill workers with the help of police, three indigenous men were killed and 30 people injured.
