Gaibandha DC seeks unconditional apology

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gaibandha has sought unconditional apology for leveling Santal people as ‘Bangali miscreants’ in a probe committee formation order.

He appeared before the HC bench, comprising justice Obaidul Hasan and justice Krishna Debnath, on Monday in a response to its order and beg for the unconditional apology.

Gaibandha DC Abdus Samad used the words ‘Bangali miscreants’ on the letter of the probe committee formation order over the attacks on the Santal people in district’s Gobindaganj upazila.

“The words ‘Bangli miscreants’ were cited in the report submitted by Gaibandha Police Super (special branch) and it was picked up in the probe committee formation order accidentally,” he said before the court today.

Now exempting the DC, the HC summoned the Gaibandha Police Super (special branch) for using the derogatory words and asked him to explain appearing before the court on January 2.

Three Santal men were killed and 27 people, including nine policemen, injured following a clash with law enforcers and workers of Rangpur Sugar Mill in Gobindaganj upazila on November 6.

The clash broke out when workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills along with police went to Bagda Farm area to reclaim land of the sugar mill allegedly occupied by the Santal community.
