Arson on Santals homes: HC orders judicial inquiry

The High Court has ordered judicial inquiry into the allegation of setting fire on the homes of Santal people in cop presence during eviction in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.

The HC bench comprising justice Obaidul Hasan and justice Krishna Debnath passed the order on Wednesday.

The court also asked the chief judicial magistrate of Gaibandha to trace the people involved in the arson and submit report by 15 days.

Different print and electronic media recently published a video record of ‘Al Jazeera’ alleging that the cops have set fire to the houses of Santals.

Two Santal men were killed and 30 people, including nine policemen, injured following a clash with law enforcers and workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills in Gobindaganj upazila on November 6.


The clash broke out when workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills along with police went to Bagda Farm area to reclaim land of the sugar mill allegedly occupied by the Santal community.
