No info on IS nod before Dhaka attack: DMP Commissioner

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said police do not have any information whether Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury took Islamic State’s (IS) approval before orchestrating the Dhaka attack.

He came up with the remark while replying to the queries of the journalists during a programme at the DMP headquarters in Dhaka on Saturday.

In the programme, Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd (DBBL) donated Tk 2 crore for construction of a building for Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police.  

“The capabilities of police have been increased after the attack on at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan. Now, police are capable to resist any kind of attack,” he said.

He said the law enforcers have killed and arrested militants in separate drives in the country since the attack, he said adding that drives are underway across country to capture the ‘Neo JMB’ leaders including Marjan, Bashar and Rajib.

Twenty hostages -- nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi American and two Bangladeshis -- were killed in the terror attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan on July 1.

Besides, two senior police officers -- Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam -- were killed when they tried to rescue the hostages.
