AL, BNP submit preferences for next EC

Ruling Awami League and its archrival BNP have proposed their preferences for reconstituting the Election Commission (EC) which will hold the next parliamentary polls.

The representative of the two leading political parties of the country submitted their choices to the Cabinet Division on Tuesday, the last day assigned by the search committee.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizivi and the party chairperson’s personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar handed the proposal to the cabinet division around 12:30am.

After sometimes, Awami League Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap submitted their preferences to the cabinet division.

Abdul Wadud, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division, said they received sealed letters from 14 political parties until 11:30am today and the rests are submitting.

Islami Oikkya Jote, Khelafat Mojlish, National Awami Party (Muzaffar), Jamiad-E-Ulama-E-Islam, Bangladesh Islami Front, Jatiyo Shomajtantrik Dal (Inu), a component in the Awami-led ruling party alliance, and BJP also submitted their proposals to the cabinet division.'

Earlier on January 28, the search committee asked names from the 31 political parties, which attended the dialogue with the President, to propose five names each for reconstituting EC.


On January 25, President Md Abdul Hamid formed the committee headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and gave them 10 working days to recommend names for the next EC.
